The Inova Governance Board has approved a $22.9 million addition to the Emergency Department at Inova Mount Vernon Hospital in Falls Church. The new facility will be about 21,000 square feet with 30 treatment bays, five fast-track bays and CT and digital x-ray systems.
The addition would create a new entrance to the hospital’s emergency department that would separate emergency patient flow from other patient and visitor traffic.
“This is an exciting announcement for the Mount Vernon community, because it represents the creation of an emergency department that fully meets the needs of this growing community – not only today, but also into the future,” Knox Singleton, CEO of Inova, said in a statement.
Building an addition as opposed to renovating the existing emergency department provides advantages, especially in regards to continuity of clinical services and minimization of patient inconvenience. After certain components of the existing department are moved into the newly constructed space, the project will free up 10,000 square feet of space for development of other clinical programs and services.
Construction for the emergency department addition is scheduled to begin in 2014.
