Winchester Medical Center has dedicated an expanded Heart & Vascular Center.

The $16 million expansion added 22,000 square feet of new space, increasing the number of pre- and post-treatment rooms from 28 to 49. They are arranged around a central clinical support area, which hospital officials say will promote efficiency and improve work flow.

The hospital will renovate existing non-invasive and invasive cardiology rooms to form one contiguous space during a second phase of construction scheduled for completion by year end.

At that time, the hospital will have 31 catheterization holding suites, three nuclear stress rooms, one stress echo room, five echo rooms, four vascular suites and three procedure rooms, including a pediatric cardiology clinic.

Last year, Heart & Vascular Center physicians and staff performed nearly 26,000 tests, catheterizations and surgical procedures to diagnose and treat heart and vascular conditions.

The new Heart & Vascular Center is part of a three-year, $161 million campus expansion project at Winchester Medical Center. A second- story addition to the hospital’s clinical lab will open next month.  A larger emergency department will be completed this fall, and a five-story North Tower that will open in January.

The Heart & Vascular Center will hold a community open house May 7 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
