From coal to urban cool?

Local developers want to convert the former headquarters of Massey Energy Co. in downtown Richmond into apartments. Ted Pile, vice president of corporate communications for Alpha Natural Resources Inc., which became the building’s owner last summer following Alpha’s acquisition of Massey, confirmed that the building is under contract.

The Edison Cos., in a joint deal with Monument Cos., wants to convert the four-story, 56,000-square-foot building at the corner of North Fourth and East Main Streets into about 70 apartments.  For years, the building served as the headquarters for Massey, one of the largest coal companies in the country prior to its merger with Alpha. Since Bristol-based Alpha bought Massey, it has trimmed the Richmond staff and doesn’t need an entire building to house them.
Edison and Monument have teamed up on other projects in Richmond, including historic buildings in Church Hill.
