Fresh Market opens Richmond store
September 19, 2012 12:08 PM

The Fresh Market Inc. opened its eighth store in Virginia on Wednesday near Richmond’s Carytown retail district.

The 23,300-square-foot store joins Panera Bread in Carytown Place, a new development on North Nansemond Street parallel to Cary Street.

The renovated building formerly housed Verizon operations.

Plans for Carytown Place drew opposition from some local residents and business owners. They feared “big-box” national retailers would change the nature of the shopping district, now dominated by boutiques and eateries.

The Fresh Market store, the third in the Richmond market, will employ about 90 workers.

Greensboro, N.C.-based Fresh Market now has 125 stores in 24 states.
