The first phase of construction for the Shops at Stonefield is under way. Developer Edens & Avant plans 270,000 square feet of commercial and retail space anchored by a 65,000-square-foot Regal Cinema with 14 screens. A 135-room hotel and 245-unit apartment complex will round out the mixed-use project on a 65-acre tract formerly known as Albemarle Place, off U. S. 29 near Hydraulic Road.
The widening of Hydraulic and other roads will begin this summer, with the project’s completion expected in November 2012. According to Edens & Avant, the new development could bring as many as 1,700 construction jobs. The Albemarle County project is the first approved under the county’s new neighborhood model, designed to take pressure off county roads by allowing neighborhoods where people can work, live and shop.
