Citizen hearing on proposed coal plant held

Dominion Resources’ proposed coal-burning power plant in Wise County brought 300 people to a State Corporation Commission hearing on Tuesday, according to the Richmond Times-Dispatch.

Some residents support the $1.86 billion plant, which would bring 250 permanent jobs to Southern Virginia. On the other hand, environmentalists argue the plant would pollute the air and water, potentially harming residents’ health. Dominion wants the plant to operate by 2012.

Dominion says the plant will use clean-coal technology, but environmentalists argue that technique has not been perfected.

Another hearing will be held Feb. 5, where the SCC will hear evidentiary testimony from Dominion and other parties.
