GOK International, a Chinese furniture assembler, plans to open operations in the Danville area employing 300 people within three years.

The company will establish a sales office and headquarters in the Old Belt One building in the Danville River District and set up assembly operations and a showroom in a 40,000-square-foot in the Cane Creek Industrial Park in the Ringgold area of Pittsylvania County.

The Danville Industrial Development Authority purchased the building and is leasing it to GOK.

The company will make capital investments of $12.5 million and has committed to hiring 300 workers in three years.

The project is being supported with a $1 million grant from the Virginia Tobacco Commission.

Hiring is expected to begin in earnest next year, with workers making an average annual salary of $30,000.

GOK specializes in office, hotel and institutional furniture.

Local officials said GOK’s move was prompted in part by a U.S. importation tax on Chinese furniture. GOK will ship furniture components to U.S. for final assembly.
