BMZ GmbH plans to spend $500,000 to establish its U.S. headquarters in Virginia Beach. BMZ is a major supplier for Stihl USA Inc., a manufacturer of power tools based in Virginia Beach. The headquarters will initially employ 15 people and grow to 50 after the first year.
“After carefully researching several states on the East Coast, we decided to locate BMZ USA in Virginia,” Sven Bauer, managing director of BMZ GmbH, said in a statement. “Virginia Beach was especially attractive because of its large community of international companies, some with which we already have business relationships. The proximity to the international port, infrastructure, abundance of qualified personnel and the assistance from the economic development office helped us finalize our decision.”
BMZ USA will handle the company’s North American sales, assembly, distribution and research and development of batteries, primarily lithium ion batteries used in a variety of industries.
It will also import lithium ion batteries from Asia to assemble into battery units.
BMZ was identified as a supplier that might be interested in locating in Virginia during a meeting Gov. Bob McDonnell had during his trade missing to Europe in July.
BMZ is based in Karlstein, Germany, and has manufacturing facilities in China, Germany and Poland.
