Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII) said Wednesday that its AMSEC LLC subsidiary will move its corporate headquarters in Virginia Beach to a new site: a six-story office building off Newtown Road adjacent to interstate 264.
AMSEC has been looking for a new location in Hampton Roads for two years. It signed a 10-year lease with the Olympia Development Corp. for space in a building at 5701 Cleveland St. that used to be the regional headquarters for Verizon. AMSEC will occupy about half of the building’s 126,000-square feet of space. According to Olympia, the deal bumps the building’s occupancy rate to 81 percent. Other tenants include Hapag-Lloyd America Inc., Kirven Orthopedic Group and American Office.
AMSEC will relocate about 300 employees from its current location on Guardian Lane in Virginia Beach to the building, which will be renamed The AMSEC Center. The company expects to be operating from its new headquarters by late November. “Change is exciting,“ Harris Leonard, HII vice president and president of AMSEC operations, said in a statement. “We believe this move will make us more effective in serving our customers as well as providing easier access to our facility.“
Olympia Development Corp. built the property in 1990 as a build-to-suit transaction for what was then C&P Telephone Co., and sold it to a private investor in 1992, although it continued to manage the building. C&P later changed its name to Verizon, and occupied the building for 18 years. Olympia bought the building back in June of 2011 and has upgraded its HVAC system, along with many of its bathrooms. “We are doing a large, major upgrade as the building is leased,” said Alison Watson, who works in Olympia’s leasing and marketing department.
With approximately 2,000 employees in 27 locations nationwide and overseas, AMSEC is a full-service supplier to the Navy and commercial maritime industry. It provides naval architecture and marine engineering, naval ship systems assessments, maintenance engineering, waterfront maintenance support, shipyard industrial engineering and C4I installation and support services.
HII, based in Newport News, designs, builds and maintains nuclear and non-nuclear ships for the U.S. Navy and Coast Guard and provides after-market services for military ships around the globe.
