Alpha Natural Resources trains coal mining search and rescue dog
June 01, 2012 3:29 PM

Bristol-based coal producer Alpha Natural Resources has trained a Dutch Shepherd dog named Ginny as a coal mining search and rescue canine.

The coal company said the dog is trained to find missing, trapped, injured or unresponsive humans in unstable conditions or confined areas in underground and surface mines.

Canine behaviorist Bill Dotson trained Ginny for more than two years, and the company’s mine search and rescue teams continue to train the dog.

Rick McAllister, Alpha’s director of continuous development and Ginny’s current handler, developed the idea for a mine search and rescue dog.
