Alpha Natural Resources plans to open offices in Sydney and New Delhi in response to the increase in demand for metallurgical and thermal coal.
“With the seaborne markets for both metallurgical and thermal coal in a growth mode, these two offices will help Alpha meet anticipated increased global demand in the long term,“ CEO Kevin S. Crutchfield said in a statement. “
The sales and development offices will focus on increasing Alpha’s coal sales to high-growth markets and develop trading opportunities and relationships in the Asian markets. The offices are expected to open by mid-2011.
In January, Alpha announced plans to acquire Massey Energy Co. If the sale is approved, the company will be the largest U.S. supplier of metallurgical coal, which is used in the steel industry.
Brian D. Sullivan, former senior vice president and general counsel for United Company in Bristol, will lead the Australian office. Suresh Iyer, vice president of risk management for Alpha, will lead the Indian office.
