Northrop Grumman selected Walbridge Southeast of Charlotte, N.C., to manage construction of a 70,000-square-foot facility to meet a planned increase in production of Virginia-class submarines at the Newport News shipyard. The new operation will be open in October 2012. (Daily Press)
Shorewood Packaging, a producer of packaging, primarily for tobacco products, will close its Newport News plant in October with the loss of 35 jobs. Last year Shorewood laid off 100 workers when it ceased lithographic printing. (Daily Press)
TowneBank, a Suffolk-based financial institution, bought the Bank of Currituck and its six North Carolina branches for $10 million. The move fits into TowneBank’s strategy for serving markets between Williamsburg and the Outer Banks. Currituck’s $35 million in loans (most of which are nonperforming) are not included in the deal and will be spun off into a non-commercial bank corporation. (Inside Business)
Western Refining Inc. will idle its Yorktown refinery, laying off about 230 of its 260 workers. The shutdown decision was prompted by a “poor outlook for East Coast refining margins,” the company said in its second-quarter earnings statement. (Richmond Times-Dispatch)
