Retiring University of Virginia President John T. Casteen III has been elected to Altria Group Inc.’s board of directors.
Altria’s board will increase from nine to 10 members.
Casteen has led U.Va. since 1990 and will retire Aug. 1. He was president of the University of Connecticut form 1985 to 1990. He served as the Virginia secretary of education from 1982 to 1985 and was dean of admission at U.Va. from 1975 until 1982.
Casteen has served on a number of corporate boards, including Connecticut Bank and Trust Co.; Sallie Mae; Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Connecticut; Wachovia Corp. and Jefferson Bank Shares Inc.
Casteen currently is a director at Sage Publications Inc., a publisher of journals and books; Jefferson Science Associates LLC, which manages the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (Jefferson Lab) in Newport News; and the Virginia University Partnership Inc., which encourages collaboration between U.Va. and 24 school divisions in Central Virginia.
