New Virginia law adds legal structure of ‘benefit corporations’

Last year Maryland became the first state to allow a new class of businesses known as “benefit corporations.” Michael Pirron, CEO of Impact Makers in Richmond, believed Virginia could benefit from the same type of corporate entity because it allows companies to think beyond the bottom line. His company, an IT management and consulting firm, already had a mission of donating profits to charities.

Newport News Shipbuilder Huntington Ingalls Industries likely to join Fortune 500

Soon Newport News economic development officials will be able to boast that their city is home to not only the largest single-site employer in Virginia, but also the headquarters of a Fortune 500 company. They’re the same entity, Huntington Ingalls Industries Inc.

Hampton Roads to move beyond JFCOM closing

Shock waves reverberated through Hampton Roads last August when Defense Secretary Robert Gates revealed plans to close the Norfolk-based U.S. Joint Forces Command. Coming just three years after the loss of 2,400 jobs with the shutdown of the Ford Norfolk Assembly plant, the announcement triggered anxiety among JFCOM’s nearly 4,000 local military and civilian workers and private contractors and spurred the region’s elected leadership into action.

A sense of place

Portsmouth is tackling several major construction projects. The Portsmouth Judicial Center, a $78 million courts complex, is scheduled for completion in September 2012. Moving the courts and judicial offices to Port Centre One near the downtown tunnel will free up valuable waterfront property. Another plan to develop valuable waterfront acreage — the former site of a Holiday Inn hotel — is on hold because the developer has been unable to secure funding. Wright says if the current developer is unable to proceed with the project, the city will find someone else. Plans call for building mixed-use space, including apartments, condominiums and a Class A office building.

Norfolk light rail system - The Tide - expected to ease traffic congestion

Passengers soon will climb aboard Virginia’s first light rail system as The Tide begins operation in Norfolk early this fall. The 7.4-mile public transit system will extend from Eastern Virginia Medical Center through downtown, adjacent to I-264 and end at the Virginia Beach city line.
