The Virginian-Pilot is eliminating 125 jobs, or about 10 percent of the newspaper’s work force, as the weak economy diminishes advertising revenues.

Most of the positions will be eliminated by layoffs and the sale of affiliated newspapers. The newspaper said other cost-cutting measures include: stopping publication of Link, a free supplement for 18-to 34-year olds; reducing the size of the paper by 40 pages; and publishing the business section only on Sundays.

Fifteen of the job cuts will be from the Pilot’s newsroom. Many of the job cuts will come from the sale of three military base publications in Alabama, Georgia and Texas.

The newspaper’s parent company, Landmark Communications, is trying to sell the newspaper. It has reported it has a buyer, who is looking for financing. (The Virginian-Pilot)
