Virginia’s wine sales grew 11.4 percent during the past year, marking a record for Virginia wine.

Virginia wineries sold 462,112 cases of wine in fiscal year 2011. That is up from the previous year’s sales of 414,785 cases.

Wine sales created about $1.8 million in wine liter tax collections for Virginia, compared with $1.6 million in fiscal year 2010. The Virginia wine liter tax is $3.60 per case of wine.

Virginia is the nation’s fifth largest state in number of wineries and sixth largest wine grape producer.

There are 200 farm wineries in the state.
