A Virginia Tech professor and graduate student have developed a way to reduce data centers’ energy consumption by 20 percent to 25 percent, which could save corporations millions of dollars.
The EcoDaemon software package was developed by Wu Feng, associate professor of computer science at Tech, and graduate student Song Huang. The developers are currently applying for a patent for the technology.
The Southeastern Universities Research Association awarded EcoDaemon the first prize in its Intellectual Property to Market competition.
A Blacksburg company hopes to sell the product as soon as next year. The software works by telling processors when to change frequency and voltage and also lowers the core temperature of computers. (Richmond Times-Dispatch)
