Virginia stock index shows slight gain in June
July 29, 2009 6:00 AMThe Virginia Business Stock Index of 50 stocks rose 1.09 percent in June, better than the Dow Jones industrial average and S&P 500 Index but lower than the Nasdaq Composite index.
Owens & Minor Inc. had the largest dollar gain during the month, $8.64. SLM Corp., commonly known as Sallie Mae, had the highest percentage increase, 55.37 percent. James River Coal Co. had the biggest loss, both in terms of dollars and percentage. It was down $7.29 or 32.52 percent.
Overall, 29 of the 50 stocks advanced in June while 21 declined.
