November 05, 2008 9:09 AM

Virginia chose Barack Obama to become the 44th president of the U.S. on Tuesday, choosing a Democratic presidential nominee for the first time since 1964.

Obama, who handily won the U.S. election, won 52 percent of the vote in Virginia, while Republican John McCain took 47 percent. Virginia overwhelmingly selected Democrat Mark Warner to fill the open seat of retiring Sen. John Warner. Mark Warner defeated another former governor, Republican Jim Gilmore, by 64 percent to 34 percent. (Richmond Times-Dispatch)
