The Virginia Marine Resources Commission agreed Tuesday to extend some restrictions on blue crab harvesting for another year, according to The Washington Post.

The prohibition of winter dredging — a practice used to catch hibernating crabs — will continue, as will the limit on harvesting to 15 percent of 2007 levels.

The commission voted to loosen some restrictions because the population of young blue crabs increased 43 percent last year. The harvesting season will end on Nov. 21,  a month later than last year. In addition, the commission lifted its ban on five-pot recreational crabbers. (The Washington Post)
