Virginia index outpaces Dow in April
May 28, 2009 12:00 AMThe Virginia Business Stock Index outperformed the Dow Jones industrial average in April as 42 of the 50 stocks on the statewide index advanced. The Virginia index rose 31.84 points in April, an increase of 8.61 percent. By comparison, the Dow increased 7.36 percent during the same month. Broader market measurements such as the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq Composite indexes rose 9.39 and 12.35 percent, respectively. In the past 12 months, the two stocks on the Virginia index posting the greatest gains are Dollar Tree Stores Inc. and Advance Auto Parts Inc. Dollar Tree was up 33.99 percent through April while Advance Auto increased 26.15 percent. View Stock Index Chart
