The Virginia Business Stock Index rose 3.1 percent in August as 33 of its 50 stocks advanced during the month.
Two major stock market measurements, the Dow Jones industrial average and the S&P 500 index performed slightly better during the month, up 3.54 percent and 3.36 percent, respectively.
Markel Corp. posted the highest gain in dollar amount during the month, up $13.29 to $328.86. Media General (the parent company of Virginia Business) had the highest percentage gain, up 75.05 percent to $8.14.
Discount retailer Dollar Tree Stores Inc. continues to be one of the leading stocks in the index over the past year. Its $49.94 stock price at the end of August was up 30.19 percent over the previous 12 months. Lumber Liquidators, however, posted a 34.9 percent gain in August to $22.15, an increase of 71.57 percent in 12 months.
