Vending, advertising to cut costs of welcome centers
March 25, 2011 4:39 AM

The Virginia Department of Transportation is offering advertising and sponsorship opportunities at welcome centers to cut operating costs.

The program, which will also allow private partners to manage vending machines at the 42 centers, should expand vending options and tourist information for travelers, according to Gov. Bob McDonnell.

“These facilities serve a critical role in providing a safe place for travelers to rest and providing information to tourists, businesses, and commuters on the many attractions and services the Commonwealth has to offer,” McDonnell said in a statement. “By partnering with the private sector, we will save taxpayer dollars, and keep our rest areas and welcome centers open.”
