Virginia Commonwealth University’s largest construction project in its history opens today on the first day of spring semester classes.

The $228 million project included expansions of VCU’s engineering and business schools. About $157 million of the project includes the new schools opening today.

Snead Hall is the new, 145,000-square-foot home for business, which is attached to the new East Hall, a 115,000-square-foot expansion of the School of Engineering. The halls will be joined by an atrium.

The buildings will include a capital markets and trading room, central atrium with a cafeteria and student commons, career center, auditorium and collaborative learning rooms.

The new buildings will allow the university to increase its enrollment in business and engineering classes by 2,000 students.
