Vacant GM plant finds a buyer
June 13, 2011 11:48 AMThe Civil War Trust wants to buy a vacant General Motors powertrain plant in Spotsylvania County so it can restore the site and turn it into a park. The Fredericksburg Free Lance-Star reported that the trust plans to raze the vacant, 300,000-square-foot plant, which closed in 2010 after operating for nearly 30 years. After restoring the 77-acre tract to the way it looked in 1862, when the Battle of Fredericksburg occurred, the trust wants to operate it as a new national park destination. Its plan goes before the county’s Board of Supervisors on Tuesday. The tract is assessed at more than $5 million.
