A Virginia Coal and Energy Commission subcommittee has approved a study to determine whether uranium mining is safe in Virginia.

The study, which would be conducted by the National Academy of Science, would focus on safety, environmental and health concerns. An economic impact study was also discussed.

Uranium Inc. has proposed mining a uranium deposit in Pittsylvania County, which could be worth up to $10 billion. The company sought a study through the General Assembly, but it was turned down.

The study could take up to a year-and-a-half to complete.
