Uranium report public briefings to be held in Virginia

The National Academy of Sciences (NAS) is holding three public briefings the week of March 26 on its study on the potential of uranium mining in Virginia that was issued in December.

Six members of the committee that wrote the report will present the committee’s findings and take questions from the audience at briefings in Richmond, Fairfax and Charlottesville.

The 18-month study identified key concerns over public health and the environment associated with uranium mining, such as radon exposure and groundwater contamination but included recommendations on how Virginia could mitigate these risks.

The study was commissioned by Virginia’s Coal and Energy Commission after Virginia Uranium Inc. said it was interested in mining two uranium deposits worth as much as $7 billion in Pittsylvania County. Virginia has had a moratorium on uranium mining for 30 years.

Gov. Bob McDonnell has appointed a Uranium Working Group that will provide detailed study of the NAS report, as well as do site-specific analysis on the Coles Hill sites. The group is scheduled to recommend whether Virginia should lift the moratorium and, if so, how it should proceed. The General Assembly is scheduled to consider lifting the moratorium in its 2013 session.
