Unemployment rate up to 3.8 percent

Virginia’s unemployment rate rose to 3.8 percent in May, mostly due to the influx of college graduates into the labor force. April’s unemployment rate was 3.3 percent.
The commonwealth fared better than the U.S. average, which was 5.2 percent for May. However, Virginia’s May unemployed rate was one percentage point higher than May 2007 at 2.8 percent.
Virginia’s metropolitan areas all saw similar trends. Northern Virginia had the lowest unemployment rate at 2.9 percent. The Danville metropolitan region had the highest unemployment rate at 7.1 percent.
