Today marks the beginning of two major hospital construction projects in Northern Virginia and Richmond. Local hospital officials from Inova Fairfax Hospital in Falls Church gathered with First Lady Maureen McDonnell to lay the building blocks for the 665,000-square-foot, 12-story Inova Women’s Hospital and Inova Children’s Hospital.

Clark Construction Group, based out of Bethesda, Md., was awarded the $215 million contract for the project. It’s part of Inova’s efforts to upgrade its Fairfax campus and represents the largest phase of a capital improvement program. The new hospital will include 192 patient rooms on four floors, a 108-bed neonatal intensive care unit, 33 labor and delivery rooms and eight operating rooms.

In Richmond, officials from Virginia Commonwealth University will meet at 4 p.m. today to mark the groundbreaking of the $168 million, 640,000-square-foot Children’s Pavilion.  The project, part of Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU, will be adjacent to VCU Medical Center at 1001 E. Broad St. It will bring the majority of outpatient pediatric services, currently spread throughout the medical campus, under one roof.  Another plus is more parking, with a 615-space parking garage part of the plans.
