A carbon capture and storage pilot project planned for a new power plant in Wise County has failed to get federal stimulus funds, a Dominion Virginia Power spokesman said today.
Dominion Virginia Power is building a $1.8 billion, 585-megawatt generating plant near St. Paul, which would be powered by coal and biofuels.
Dominion and Virginia Tech had planned to create a $580 million carbon capture and storage demonstration project at the plant. They applied to the Department of Energy hoping to pay for half the project’s cost with federal stimulus funds. The application, however, was denied, said spokesman Greg Edwards.
Edwards said the company hopes to find other federal funding for the pilot project, adding that the project would not be able to move forward without government support.
The spokesman said Dominion remains committed to installing carbon capture and storage equipment at the Wise County plant when it becomes commercially available.
Let’s hope Dominion Virginia Power goes through with their carbon capture and storage project in Wise County. With or without federal funding, it’s a great project.
