Sprint Nextel plans to move its corporate headquarters from Reston to Overland Park, Kan., a suburb of Kansas City.
The company, one of Virginia’s 17 Fortune 500 firms, had maintained corporate offices in Reston and operational headquarters in Overland Park since the merger of Nextel and Sprint in 2005. Dan Hesse, the company’s CEO, said the consolidation will involve the transfer of only a small number of senior executives.
Sprint Nextel is the second major company to shift its Northern Virginia headquarters in the past five months. AOL, a division of Time Warner Inc., announced in September that it was moving from Dulles to New York
Sprint Nextel expects the move to reduce travel expenses while immersing top executives in its operations. The company has 4,400 employees in the Washington, D.C., area and 13,300 in the Kansas City area.
