Alliant Techsystems, a defense contractor headquartered in Minneapolis, received a Secretary of the Army Energy and Water Management Award for its efforts in managing energy at the company’s Radford Army Ammunition Plant. Increased output at the plant since 2003 resulted in higher demand for steam and electricity. A study identified ways to achieve savings through repairs and system optimization. A conservation plan was included in an overall modernization project and a reduction in emissions and increase in efficiency was achieved without impacting production levels. (PRNewswire)

Consultants in Cardiology, a cardiology practice based in Roanoke, will become part of Carilion Clinic, the Roanoke Valley’s largest health-care provider. Consultants in Cardiology has operated for 35 years, and is the largest cardiology practice in Southwest Virginia with a staff of 100, including 14 physicians. The merger takes effect Jan. 1.  (The Roanoke Times)

The Hotel Roanoke & Conference Center plans to add guest rooms, meeting space and a spa. Proposals are being solicited from architecture and engineering firms for plans that would encompass 125 new guest rooms, a 6,000- to 8,000-square-foot spa/wellness clinic and 15,000 square feet of meeting, office and storage space. No timetable has been announced with 2010 the earliest that officials expect work to be finished. (The Roanoke Times)
