Buchanan General Hospital received platinum, gold and silver awards for excellence in quality improvement measures from the Virginia Health Quality Center. The platinum award marks facilities that are in the top 10 percent of all hospitals in one or more clinical areas of acute care. (News release)

Draper Aden Associates, a Blacksburg-based engineering firm, was named among the Top 50 Trenchless Technology Design Firms in the country by Trenchless Technology News. Trenchless technology is used in the management of underground infrastructure. (News release)

ITT Night Vision of Roanoke received a $174.7 million order from the Army for night vision monoculars and other gear. (The Roanoke Times)

Optical Cable Inc. of Roanoke received a $2.6 million order, over five years, from the Army for tactical fiber optic cable assemblies to enhance communication for troops in combat. (The Roanoke Times)

TMEIC-GE, a joint engineering venture between Toshiba Mitsubishi-Electric Industrial Systems Corp. and General Electric Inc., decided to keep its North American headquarters in Roanoke after considering Charlotte, N.C., Atlanta and Houston, among other locations. Major considerations in the decision were the quality of life in Roanoke, plus relationships with Virginia Tech and the University of Virginia. The company, which has 268 employees, will move from GE’s Salem plant to 85,000 square feet of space in the former Atlantic Mutual Companies building in Roanoke County. (The Roanoke Times)

The Virginia Economic Development Partnership accepted two Southwest Virginia companies into its new export development program to help businesses pursue opportunities in overseas markets. Hill Studio of Roanoke is an architectural firm focused on community design for housing, master planning and historic preservation. Zenith Power Products LLC of Bristol is a supplier of industrial engines in the North American market. (News release)
