Smithfield to cut 630 jobs in Virginia
- February 18, 2009
Smithfield Foods Inc. has announced it will cut 630 jobs in Smithfield.
The company is cutting 390 jobs and offering 290 employees transfer to North Carolina as it closes its Smithfield Packaging Co. South plant in December.
The pork and packaged meat processor is the town’s biggest employer.
Company officials told the Richmond Times-Dispatch that the layoffs came from the need to restructure after many acquisitions, rather than the weak economy. (Richmond Times-Dispatch)
