Beer makers Molson Coors Brewing Co. of Colorado and SABMiller PLC of Milwaukee agreed to combine the U.S. and Puerto Rican operations of their subsidiaries Coors and Miller under the name MillerCoors LLC in a bid to make their products more competitive. SRI International Shenandoah Valley, along with state and local officials, broke ground on the Center for Advanced Drug Research in Rockingham County. The research center will work with state universities on developing treatments for tuberculosis and pneumonia, among other ailments. Virginia backed a $22 million incentive package to secure the project, and county officials agreed to build a 40,000-square-foot facility in Rockingham’s technology park. (Daily News Record)

SPSA LLC, Harrisonburg, was awarded a $54 million contract over five years by the Marine Corps for explosive ordnance kits that allow for discovery and dismantling of explosive devices. (Daily News Record)

Harrisonburg City Council approved zoning to clear the way for a seven-story high-rise apartment complex on Port Republic Road. The builder is Janis Brown Enterprises. The project will be the first under the city’s R-5 high density residential zoning, designed to concentrate college students closer to James Madison University. (Daily News Record)

The Shenandoah Valley Network, the Coalition for Smarter Growth and Larry Allamong of Fisher Hill, filed suit in federal court in Charlottesville against the Virginia Department of Transportation and the Federal Highway Administration to stop plans for widening Interstate 81. The plaintiffs maintain the $11.4 billion plan threatens farmland and historic battlefields and downplays the role of rail in alleviating heavy traffic on the highway. (Daily News Record)
