Sears Holdings Corp. eyes Washington metro region for possible corporate headquarters
June 20, 2011 11:35 AM

Sears Holdings Corp., owner of the Sears and Kmart retail chains, has been making inquiries about sites in the Washington area as it explores a possible headquarters relocation, according to The Washington Post. Virginia is reportedly among several states getting a look as the company ponders whether to stay in Illinois, which recently raised corporate tax rates.  Now located in a Chicago suburb, Sears leases 2.4 million square feet and employs 6,200 people.  While the company lost money in the first quarter and has been laying off Kmart employees, it remains one of the country’s largest retailers with more than 4,000 Sears, Kmart and specialty stores in the U.S. and Canada.
