Salahi resigns from tourism board
- December 29, 2009
Virginia tourism officials are trying to draw media attention to the state, but the spotlight following one of their board members probably wasn’t what they had in mind.
In early December Tareq Salahi resigned from the tourism board, saying he didn’t want it to be distracted by “tabloid type” coverage of him and wife, Michaele.
The Salahis have been dubbed “White House party crashers” for attending a state dinner uninvited. In their defense, the couple released an exchange of e-mails with a White House official about obtaining an invitation. Congress began hearings looking into the security breach.
Meanwhile, the commonwealth is probing the fund-raising practices of a charity event started by the Salahis, America’s Polo Cup.
Salahi was appointed to the tourism board in 2006 by Gov. Timothy M. Kaine.
