Three Virginia counties have won awards for their efforts in economic development. The Virginia Economic Developers Association singled out Roanoke County, Winchester-Frederick and Fairfax for its 2010 Community Economic Development Awards.
Roanoke County and Winchester-Frederick won in the population category of between 40,001-100,000 people. Roanoke was cited for the Green Ridge Recreation Center, a publicly-owned, multi-generational project designed to anchor a proposed new business park.
A “Stop Your Commute” campaign made Winchester-Frederick stand out. The one-month promotional campaign educated commuters about the cost of commuting and encouraged them to consider local jobs.
The award winner in the 100,000 plus population category went to Fairfax. The county has captured several new major business enterprises. They include the corporate headquarters of Volkswagen Group America, Hilton Worldwide, Science Applications International Corp. as well as a new medical research project, The Ignite Institute.
