A rainbow-colored flag that created a flap when it flew in Richmond last year will be donated to a local museum.
The Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond drew criticism from social conservatives when, at the request of PRISM, an employee group, it flew the flag last June in observance of LGBT Pride Month. (The acronym stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender.)
The move was denounced by Delegate Bob Marshall, now a Republican candidate for the U.S. Senate, and the Family Foundation.
The bank now plans to donate the flag to the Valentine Richmond History Center, a museum that collects artifacts connected with the city’s history.
“We are proud that we flew the flag to send the clear message that we do not discriminate in our workplace,” said Richmond Fed President Jeffrey M. Lacker. “Likewise, we’re proud to make this donation so that the flag, and what it symbolizes, can be preserved by the History Center.”
