Resort wins environmental award

When Lansdowne Resort officials talk about their green assets, they’re not referring to their expansive lawns or golf course. The 500-acre resort last November was awarded an EcoCEO Award in the “large implementer” category by SmartCEO Magazine for green initiatives that include recycling, water-conservation, air-quality and energy-management programs.
“Being green is part of our mission and a goal of the resort,” says Warren J. Breaux, Lansdowne’s director of sales and marketing.
Lansdowne was one of the first resorts to receive the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality’s Green Award for its 45,000-square-foot conference center and its 296 guest rooms and suites. It has also achieved the International Association of Conference Centers’ Gold Tier Code of Sustainability Green Star for its adherence to 59 environmental tenets.
A key part of the resort’s environmental programs is its green committee, which established, oversees and periodically reviews a variety of initiatives, including an environmental policy for staff, clients and the community.
Lansdowne has installed water-saving devices on taps, toilets, showers and other devices; uses drought-resistant plantings for landscaping; and donates, reuses or recycles as many unneeded or waste items as possible. It also has developed metrics to track money saved because of increased recycling and has enlisted partners that can supply environmentally responsible supplies, including locally grown and organic foods, recycled building, and paper products and chemical-free, biodegradable cleaning products. This spring, Lansdowne Resort will build a 600-square-foot composting pit.
“We feel strongly that this is a valuable and hands-on community service and one that our guests and clients tell us is important to them,” he says. “It’s a business decision in the short- and long-term plans for the resort. However, it’s not only about saving money; it’s about running more efficiently and environmentally sound.”
