Repositioning of downtown office building in Newport News wins tenants

A major repositioning of a downtown office building in Newport News is starting to pay off for Maritime Square LLC. Since acquiring the property at 2600 Washington Ave. nearly 18 months ago, the company says it has signed more than 56,000 square feet of leases. The majority of the deals, which make up more than 30,000 square feet, comes from new tenants, including four departments from Huntington Ingalls Inc., the Virginia Indigent Defense Commission and Attorney James S. Ellenson.
Existing tenants, including the Virginia Marine Resources Commission and the law firm of Fox & Reiss PC also renewed about 25,000 square feet of space.
After buying the building, Maritime Square invested in many capital improvements. It has refurbished the parking lot, lobbies and restrooms, installed new roofs and done major upgrades to the heating and cooling systems. The multi-story,135,000-square-foot building was built in 1969.
Stephen Shelesky, a partner in Maritime Square, said in a statement: “We were persuaded to invest by the property’s iconic presence on the downtown Newport News skyline and convenient location near City Hall, the courthouse, and many Huntington Ingalls Inc. facilities, including the corporate headquarters.”
Jay Joseph and Alex Stern, both senior vice presidents with Harvey Lindsay Commercial Real Estate in Newport News, represented the landlord in the transactions.
