A new study identifies the seven hospitals as the most efficient and productive in Virginia.

The report by Virginia Health Information (VHI), a Richmond-based nonprofit organization, includes a “composite efficiency and productivity” (CEP) score, an overall efficiency ranking for hospitals. The scores are based on cost, productivity and utilization indicators.

These hospitals ranked in the top 10 percent in the state on CEP scores:

  Riverside Walter Reed Hospital, Gloucester

  Winchester Medical Center, Winchester

Bon Secours Memorial Regional Medical Center, Mechanicsville

  Inova Fairfax Hospital, Falls Church

  Sentara Bayside Hospital, Virginia Beach

  Sentara Leigh Hospital, Norfolk

  Virginia Hospital Center, Arlington

The VHI study, “2009 Industry Report: Virginia Hospitals and Nursing Facilities,” includes 18 hospital indicators, including charity-care contributions, staffing levels, profit margins, and average costs and payments per admission. VHI says Virginia hospitals provided more than $1.4 billion in uncompensated care to patients, a figure equal to 4 percent of gross patient revenue.
