Remedi SeniorCare, which provides pharmacy services to long-term care facilities, has moved into a new 22,000-square-foot facility in Hanover County. The Richmond region is the first of three, new automated pharmacies Baltimore-based Remedi plans to open this year. The others will be in Ohio and Pennsylvania.

The company’s new pharmacy is equipped with Paxit, an automated robotic dispensing technology that can support 10,000 long-term care residents throughout Virginia.  Remedi says the system delivers resident-specific, unit-dose medication with accuracy rates that reduce drug costs by 15 percent or more.

In a press release, the company said Paxit reduces inventory levels to two days, eliminating waste often associated with 30-day, tablet cards known in the industry as “bingo cards.” Nurses have to punch out the pills from the large cards.  In comparison, Paxit packages pills in small, easy-to-open pouches that contain a patient’s name and a day’s worth of medication.

“The commonwealth has built an exceptional reputation as one of the top areas in the country to develop and utilize innovative technologies,” Michael Bronfein, Remedi SeniorCare’s chairman and CEO, said in a statement.

According to Bronfein, senior care is rising in the area. The company cited figures from the Virginia Division for the Aging that showed that the number of older adults in Virginia will reach 1.8 million by 2030 – more than double the population in 2000. “We believe our innovative technology will make a big difference in better resident-centered care,” he said.

Remedi SeniorCare has been in the Richmond area since 2009. It moved from an 8,000-square-foot location on Parham Road to the larger space in Hanover, which has room for its new system and can support future growth. With the change, the company added three positions, boosting its number of employees to 32.
