A measure added to a Virginia House committee’s budget bill would try to salvage the project to extend Metrorail to Tysons Corner and Washington Dulles International Airport.

Del. Joe May, R-Leesburg, added the measure to the House Appropriations Committee’s budget bill. It would require Gov. Timothy M. Kaine to rebid the entire project and address concerns from the Federal Transit Administration.

FTA officials told Virginia legislators and officials last month that the project would likely not receive $900 million in federal funds unless key concerns were addressed. The federal money is essential for the $5 billion project.

The provision passed the House committee on Sunday and will head to a vote by the full House of Delegates this week.

Some of the concerns listed by FTA officials included the project’s ballooning price and Metro’s ability to handle it with an already aging system.
