Production begins at Martinsville titanium plant
October 12, 2012 4:25 PM

Pittsburgh-based RTI International Metals Inc. has announced the start of commercial production of titanium at its $135 million manufacturing plant in Martinsville.

At a Thursday ceremony, company officials celebrated the production of the first product at the forging, grinding and hot-rolling plant.  Attending the ceremony were Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell and executives from Airbus, which will use much of the factory’s titanium output to produce passenger jets.

The beginning of production at Martinsville followed more than 10 months of certification testing to meet Airbus’ initial qualification standards.

At full capacity, the plant can produce up to 14 million pounds of product annually. The plant has created 25 jobs, a number officials expect to grow as operations expand.
