An organization backing efforts to lift a uranium mining ban in Virginia has launched an ad campaign in Southern Virginia.

The group, People for Economic Prosperity, said it has begun running ads in newspapers and on billboards to rally support for the “Coles Hill uranium project” in Pittsylvania County, a site near Chatham where Virginia Uranium Inc. hopes to mine an estimated 119 million-pound ore deposit.

“In less than a year, our organization has grown from just a handful of uranium mining supporters to a community of more than 4,000 Southside Virginians,” Lillian Gillespie, the former mayor of Hurt who chairs People for Economic Prosperity, said in a statement. “Our message is simple: we support safe and responsible uranium mining in Pittsylvania County because our region needs the jobs and economic opportunity it will bring.”

An attempt to lift the 31-year-old mining ban failed in the Virginia General Assembly last year.
