November 03, 2011 3:26 PM

Norfolk Southern Corp. plans to hire 500 employees in eight states by the end of the year to meet growing freight service demand and to replace employees expected to retire in coming years.

The railroad is seeking applicants as conductors, freight-car repairers, machinists, signal maintainers and track workers in Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee and Virginia.

In Virginia, the Norfolk-based transportation plans to hire employees for its operations in Manassas and Roanoke.

Cindy Earhart, Norfolk Southern’s vice president of human resources, said the company has hired more than 3,500 employees so far this year and plans to add 2,600 employees next year.
Most of the jobs involve working outdoors and at night, on weekends and holiday shifts

Norfolk Southern operates approximately 20,000 route miles of track in 22 states and the District of Columbia.
