Norfolk-based customs broker Hipage Co. Inc. has been acquired by Livingston International.

Peter Luit, president and CEO of Chicago-based Livingston, said the deal is a strategic move that extends the company’s customs and compliance expertise as well as its international freight forwarding capability to companies importing and exporting through the southeastern U.S.

He said the acquisition also gives Livingston added expertise in the operation and administration of foreign trade zones, a program in the United States to provide U.S. companies with deferred or reduced, and the possible elimination of, U.S. customs duties.

Hipage is one of the oldest customs brokers in the United States. The company employs more than 100 people in Norfolk and other offices in Atlanta and Savannah, Ga.; Charleston, S.C.; Charlotte, Greensboro, Raleigh and Wilmington, N.C.; Dublin and Richmond, Va.; and Milwaukee.

Founded in 1927, the company specializes in customs brokerage and air, ocean and domestic forwarding as well as export services.

Livingston is one of the top five customs entry filers in the United States and Canada’s largest customs broker. It employs more than 2,300 employees at approximately 100 key border points, seaports, airports and other strategic locations.
