Beginning Sept. 1, the typical residential customer electric bill in Virginia is going to get higher. The State Corporation Commission announced today that it is allowing Dominion Virginia Power to recover costs associated with the regional electric transmission system.
It expects the new rider to bump up customer bills by $1.20 per month. The surcharge recovers the federally-approved wholesale rates Dominion pays to PJM Interconnection, the coordinator of the regional grid.
Overall, the surcharge will generate $217.8 million in revenue over 12 months. Since it will cover transmission costs that had been included in Dominion Virginia Power’s basic rates, there will be a corresponding reduction in base rates. However, rates are expected to rise more in the near future as Dominion seeks a series of increases to offset major capital projects.
