David C. Freinberg has become chief executive officer of Richmond-based law firm LeClairRyan.

Freinberg, a resident of Maplewood, N.J., succeeds firm co-founder Gary D. LeClair, who will remain chairman of LeClairRyan. The change was effective July 1.

Freinberg works from the firm’s 85-employee Newark office.

LeClairRyan announced a succession plan last year in which Freinberg would serve as chief practice officer before becoming CEO.

During the past year, Freinberg led the firm’s client service initiatives, overseeing its practice area, industry and client teams. As CEO, he now will be responsible for the firm’s day-to-day management and the execution of its strategies.
Freinberg’s legal practice has focused on commercial real estate transactions and general business matters.
LeClairRyan has about 350 attorneys in offices in California, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Washington, D.C.
